Tips for a Great Wedding Film

By Tanya D’Herville Photo & Video . 𝑲𝙚𝒆𝙥 𝙩𝒉𝙞𝒏𝙜𝒔 𝒕𝙞𝒅𝙮: If you’re getting ready in a hotel room move your suitcases out of site. If you’re getting ready at home, move unnecessary things and clutter out of the way – make some space for your videographer to move around. The more space, the more options you have to be creative. . 𝙉𝒊𝙘𝒆 𝑵𝙖𝒕𝙪𝒓𝙖𝒍 𝑳𝙞𝒈𝙝𝒕: Get ready in an area with heaps of natural light. Natural light loves you and your skin loves natural light. . 𝙌𝒖𝙖𝒍𝙞𝒕𝙮 𝙀𝒗𝙚𝒏𝙞𝒏𝙜 𝙇𝒊𝙜𝒉𝙩: So the sun has gone down, what about lighting? Don’t be surprised if your venue hasn’t the best quality light, I am seeing it more and more these days, speak with your decorators about additional lighting to set the ambience you desire. Reminder** Videography does not rely on a flash mounted above the camera as photographers do, so good quality constant evening lighting is MUST! I will assist you here and advise on what’s best or whom you can hire these from. . 𝑹𝙚𝒍𝙖𝒙: Throughout the day try to forget that you’re being filmed and photographed, obviously, that’s easier said than done. Looking at the camera or waiting for instructions can take away a little of the magic. Focus on each other and enjoy the day, be lost in the moment. As your videographer I want to capture your day as it unfolds, so relax into it, celebrate, dance, laugh, cry, hug, kiss and be your weird selves. . 𝑰𝙣𝒇𝙤𝒓𝙢𝒂𝙩𝒊𝙤𝒏: Well before the wedding date, there should be a sit-down meeting or several phone calls between us to discuss what is being looked for in the video. Are there certain moments that need to be captured? Will there be any surprises or choreographed dances? (Which I love by the way) . 𝑨𝙪𝒅𝙞𝒐: Audio is essential to get right, it’s half the video. The best way to capture the best quality audio is at the source, it is recommended that there is a good quality PA system, this is a microphone and speaker on a stand, preferably two speakers to surround the sound quality. These are supplied by your vendor or venue. A small lapel microphone will be placed on the groom and bride where applicable - those are supplied by myself. This is primarily for those important vows, speeches and your dance as it only is said and done once therefore, I back my audio up with several other hidden mics 007 style! . 𝑯𝙞𝒓𝙞𝒏𝙜 𝙖 𝙒𝒆𝙙𝒅𝙞𝒏𝙜 𝙑𝒊𝙙𝒆𝙤𝒈𝙧𝒂𝙥𝒉𝙚𝒓 𝒂 𝒎𝙪𝒔𝙩 𝙤𝒓 𝒂 𝒎𝙖𝒚𝙗𝒆? The day literally flies by and there are special moments that are easily missed that a videographer can capture beautifully. Many couples ask me if it’s worth getting coverage of their morning preparations. I believe it is one of the most important parts of the day. Not only does filming before the ceremony get you and your bridal party used to being in front of the camera (a very foreign thing for most people) morning prep also adds to the chronology of the video. It creates excitement and anticipation for the aisle walk and let us be honest, who doesn’t like seeing their other half all nervous and cute? . 𝑹𝙪𝒏𝙣𝒊𝙣𝒈 𝒏𝙤𝒔𝙚𝒔. Yes, this made it to the top. 10 helpful hints When the tears have flowed we are left with sniffles so to save your audio sounding like “I Jo, sniff, take the sniff Jane, sniff sniff, to be my wife”. Just have a handkerchief ready and release yourself of further sniffling, you will enjoy listening back to your vowels this way. . 𝑪𝙤𝒎𝙢𝒖𝙣𝒊𝙘𝒂𝙩𝒊𝙤𝒏 𝒂𝙣𝒅 𝑪𝙤𝒐𝙧𝒅𝙞𝒏𝙖𝒕𝙞𝒐𝙣 𝙞𝒔 𝒌𝙚𝒚. Completely unaware, as the Bride and Groom should be, is the communication and coordination that are humming along in the background between videographers and photographers, stylists, decorators, celebrants, drivers, florists, MCs, event or venue managers, chefs, musicians, DJs and alike. It’s an extraordinary dance between us all and we all need to have everything to synchronize and balance. Sometimes certain areas of the day run late, it happens so this is where my experience comes in. If you didn’t notice it on your wedding day, then you have hired the right professionals to do the job . 𝙒𝒉𝙖𝒕 𝒔𝙝𝒐𝙪𝒍𝙙 𝙄 𝙬𝒓𝙞𝒕𝙚 𝙞𝒏 𝒎𝙮 𝙬𝒆𝙙𝒅𝙞𝒏𝙜 𝙫𝒐𝙬𝒆𝙡𝒔 𝒂𝙣𝒅 𝒔𝙥𝒆𝙚𝒄𝙝𝒆𝙨? A great celebrant will guide you well here, we want your love story. Speeches, just give it from the heart. I have seen speeches for 20 minutes, then one speech that goes for 2 minutes that crushes anything because it was spoken from the heart. Do some research on what to say, but feel it out when in the moment. . .
